Sorry VH1

I think I spoke too soon when I trashed VH1 for showing too much reality TV. There is a lot of programming on that channel and others that deserves being trashed, but I came across a pleasant surprise Saturday night.

I was being lazy on the couch and flipped on the TV. Somewhere in between getting comfortable, getting my dog comfortable on the couch with me, and finally settling in. I lost the remote. I was so cozy I didnt want to move. So I decided I would just have to watch whatever was on. It was VH1...I thought great...I can watch people scream and yell and throw things at each other for a while. But that wasnt at all what was on. It was a show called "Rock Docs".

And it was great.

I didnt want to get up to find the remote.

The show was featuring The Who. Which of course I had heard of The Who and Teenage Wasteland. But as the show kept going on, songs I had heard growing up over and over again whether sung by The Who or covered by another band kept playing in the background of the documentary. And I got to learn where these songs came from. Who wrote them. The history and inspiration behind them.

I got to learn about the men who were a part of this band. The evolution of the music over the decades this group stayed together.

I learned about "Tommy" and learned that Pink Floyd does not in fact sing "Pinball Wizard"...(thanks Napster). And that this "stream of consciousness" that Pete Townshend was talking about and everyone thought he was crazy was actually the next big thing...albums. Instead of just singles.

All in all, it was an excellent program and took a deep and introspective look into the family aspect of this band. As queer as it might be, I cried while watching the show when Keith Moon died. And then again when John Entwistle died.

Way to go VH1...still holding onto some quality programming.
